About us

Our History

Our library was opened on 11 July 1984 under the name of "Cultural Center Library" in the first cultural center of Batman at the address of Ziya Gökalp Mahallesi Yaşar Kemal Caddesi No: 6.Our library, which served as the Cultural Center Library until 1987, was separated from the Cultural Center Directorate in 1987 and was renamed the "District Public Library Directorate" in the same building, after that, with Batman becoming a province on May 16, 1990, it has been serving as the "Provincial Public Library Directorate" since then. Our library has been serving on the first and second floors of the Old Cultural Center Building belonging to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism from 1984 to mid-November 2016, while in 2016, from mid-November to mid-November 2020, it had served in the lower and upper floors of the Cultural Center temporarily in a area of 1250 m2.

Following the Batman Municipal Council Decision dated 05.03.2019 and numbered 3-127, following the decision of the Batman Municipality Council dated 14.03.2019 and numbered 20-15, the protocol dated 29.03.2019 and the Additional Protocol dated 01.04.2019, Information Houses owned by TR Batman Municipality has been allocated to the Provincial Public Library Directorate for 10 (ten) years to be used as a library, temporarily together with the existing Municipality personnel, until the sufficient personnel staff is recruited by our Ministry. As of 29.03.2019, they have been serving under our ministry as Petrolkent Library in Petrolkent neighborhood, Ahmet Kaya Library in Huzur neighborhood, Yunus Emre Branch Public Library in Gültepe neighborhood and Batman Children's Library in Beşevler neighborhood.

To support the individual and lifelong learning efforts of our citizens, to create the habit of using the library, to develop the culture of reading, to create sensitivity to cultural heritage, art and science, to meet the needs of information necessary for the social, cultural and economic development of Batman and its region, to keep up with the rapidly developing information age by creating equal opportunities for all segments and ages.

To meet the information needs of its users, organizing information services in line with modern developments, providing information for our citizens of all ages and levels, raising their cultural level, making use of their time, enabling them to benefit freely and free of charge from books and other information resources on any subject they want, to be a universal library that provides contemporary information services at the highest level.
